Club Status vs. Varsity Status
Virginia Men’s Rowing is a club program. The athletes pay dues and take part in fundraising. VMR is not supported financially by the UVa Athletics Department. Nevertheless, the program is thriving. For instance, VMR is unique among club teams in that it is primarily led not by its athletes (though they have a significant voice in its operations), but rather by its board of directors and its coaches.
VMR owns six-and-a-half acres of land on the banks of the Rivanna Reservoir, where its five-bay boathouse is located. The program rents boat bays and rack space to the UVa women’s crew, to the Rivanna Rowing Club, and to individual scullers. In addition, our alumni have been generous with their financial contributions, which have afforded us many advantages.
Virginia Men’s Rowing represents the University of Virginia at races all over the United States. Its club status is not used as an excuse, not is it considered a hindrance to progress. VMR recruits, trains, and races just like any Division I rowing team, and it expects success.
